Worcester UniversityWorcester University was established as the Emergency Teacher Training College in 1947 with only a few students. Today, it is well respected both at home and overseas for its postgraduate taught programmes and has strong links with local industry. The current student population of the University of Worcester is about 8,000 - 80 per cent of whom are on undergraduate courses, 19 per cent on taught postgraduate programmes and one per cent involved in research. A sizeable percentage of students at Worcester University are special needs students and many come from overseas. The staff population of the university is about 650. Worcester University Campus LifeWorcester University operates out of one campus, the Parkland Campus, which is located on the outskirts of the city in an attractive setting. Facilities are excellent and the atmosphere vibrant, while accommodation is in well-appointed halls of residence and nearby self catered flats.The Worcester Students' Union is without doubt the focus of student life at Worcester University, with a wide range of clubs, societies and activities available to students. In addition, the library and the computer facilities are excellent and there is also the well-equipped Sports Centre and new Digital Arts Centre on-site. Food is also taken care of on-campus, with the popular Food Court, Cafe Connections, and Ritazza Coffee Shop; all of which have vegetarian options.
Worcester CityWorcester is a delightful city on the River Severn and is best known for Worcester porcelain and its cathedral. The city is easy to navigate, with several pedestrianised streets, and it offers many historical and contemporary attractions, as well as enviable shopping and an interesting nightlife.Fishing and boating are two leisure-orientated pastimes in Worcester, while nearby Hereford and the beautiful Severn Valley offer interesting alternatives. For a medium-sized city, Worcester excels in its food and beverage offerings, with numerous international restaurants and many excellent bars and pubs - Tramps nightclub has one of the best sound systems of anywhere.
Student LoansWorcester University is allowed to charge new, full-time students up to £3,000 a year for tuition fees from September 2006. Many students will apply for a student loan to cover their tuition fees and day to day living costs. Student loans are the best option for borrowing money for college as interest rates are traditionally low and repayments don't start until graduated students are in work and are earning over £15,000.
