St Andrews University Campus Life

St Andrews University is not actually a campus university, in that the various schools are totally integrated into the medieval town of St Andrews. The setting is amazing; with the fascinating old town overlooking St Andrews Bay and an array of striking old buildings that add to the ambience.

Accommodation options at St Andrews University include catered and self-catered rooms (standard or ensuite) in old or modern halls of residence, and residences and student houses in the town.

Student facilities and services are excellent and include a Chaplaincy, an excellent library, computer and telephone services, a music centre, extensive sports facilities. Student welfare services are also excellent and cover spiritual, financial and academic issues.

St Andrews University Students' Association is located in St Mary’s Place and is an important part of a student’s social life, with entertainment venues, a travel service, clothing, and even a post office.

St Andrews Town

St Andrews is a small and ancient town on the windswept east coast of Scotland and is most famously known as the ‘Home of Golf’; St Andrews Golf Course being the first and world’s oldest.

The town of St Andrews is firmly intertwined with St Andrews University and always has been, yet boasts many other quality distractions, including the 13th century Castle of St Andrews and St Andrew’s Cathedral and Priory.

There are plenty of options for eating and drinking, from budget greasy-spoon cafes to fine restaurants for golfing types and several traditional pubs with real ale. As would be expected in a hugely important golfing town, there are many golf goodies to be had here, while second-hand clothes outlets are also in abundance. The Byre Theatre represents St Andrews’ offering to the performing arts.

Student Loans

St Andrews University is allowed to charge UK non-Scots between £1,700 and £1,900 per year. Scottish and EU students from outside the UK will have their fees paid for them by the SAAS (Student Awards Agency for Scotland) but will have to pay the Graduate Endowment upon successful completion of their degree. Student loans are the best option for covering tuition fees and day to day living costs as interest rates are traditionally low and repayments don't start until graduated students are in work and are earning over £15,000.
