Southampton University

Southampton University is one of the UK’s top ten universities and has its origins in the mid-1800s in the days of the Hartley Institution. It carries its fine reputation of yesteryear with it today, attracting students the world over in-light of its excellence in teaching and research.

The seven campuses at the University of Southampton hold close to 5,000 staff and 20,000 students; 2,000 of whom are from overseas.

There are three faculties at the university and more than 20 Academic Schools culminating in a plethora of interesting courses offered to full- and part-time undergraduate and postgraduate students. The three faculties at Southampton University include the:

 • Faculty of Engineering, Science and Mathematics
 • Faculty of Law, Arts and Social Sciences
 • and the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences

Southampton University Campus Life

Six of Southampton University’s campuses are located within Southampton itself and the other in nearby Winchester. Accommodation is in 20 halls of residence and off-campus, self-catered accommodation, while social amenities and welfare services for students of all ages are excellent.

The Southampton University Students' Union (SUSU) is located in the heart of the university at the Highfield Campus and comes with a restaurant, bars and numerous quality societies and clubs. Other university facilities include: the fully-equipped Jubilee Sports Centre, banks, shops, cafes, a travel centre, medical centres, a hair and beauty salon, theatre, an art gallery, a cinema and a nightclub.

The Jubilee Sports Centre is something else and is envied by universities nationwide. It is located next to the Students’ Union and features a 25-metre swimming pool, a well equipped badminton court sports hall/basketball court, netball and volleyball, and a huge, split-level gym. In addition, the Highfield Campus offers squash courts, dance studios and a martial arts studio.

Southampton City

Known as 'The Gateway to the World', Southampton is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city on England’s verdant south coast, boasting a rich maritime history, quality shopping and entertainment options, and is very affordable.

The main shopping area in the centre of Southampton is pedestrianised and quality brand name and unique sailing stores abound. The city also has an incredible amount of green areas and is bordered by the beautiful New Forest, meaning ample opportunity to take advantage of the multitude of leisure pursuits available.

In addition, the popular seaside towns of Bournemouth and Portsmouth are also nearby and getting to Southampton and away is made easy by its international airport and excellent road and rail connections.

Student Loans

Southampton University is allowed to charge new, full-time students up to £3,000 a year for tuition fees from September 2006. Many students will apply for a student loan to cover their tuition fees and day to day living costs. Student loans are the best option for borrowing money for college as interest rates are traditionally low and repayments don't start until graduated students are in work and are earning over £15,000.
