Portsmouth University

Portsmouth University has routes dating back to the mid-19th century; then the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Arts. Although it wasn’t until the early 1990s that Portsmouth University gained full university status, it is well known globally and offers many quality courses in several departments.

Five schools of faculty at the University of Portsmouth provide excellent coverage of a diverse range of subjects for undergraduate and postgraduate students and it is particularly revered for its traditional programmes, including Geography and Pharmaceuticals.

Portsmouth University Campus Life

Student facilities and services at Portsmouth University campus are excellent, with quality library facilities, very good student welfare and many sports clubs. Good quality accommodation is available in halls of residence, while nearby accommodation can also be had at the popular seaside resort of Southsea; not far from the university and the beach.

Sports opportunities are good at Portsmouth University, with the excellent Sport and Recreation Department, the nearby St Paul's Gym and the Nuffield Sports Centre.

The campus also has a good offering of shops, cafes and restaurants and the University of Portsmouth Students' Union boasts a nightclub, cocktail bar and cheap drinks.

Portsmouth City

Portsmouth is one of England’s gems and is famed for its rich maritime history, castles and museums, and shopping and nightlife. There are also some great beaches here making it an ideal combination for any budding university student. The Royal Dockyard is Portsmouth’s star attraction, with Henry VIII's Mary Rose, HMS Victory and the mighty HMS Warrior all on display.

The city centre comes with quality shopping centres, while the beachfront area of Southsea has no end of cafes, restaurants, bars, pubs, and clubs, as well as numerous other entertainment options, including the theatre and cinema. In addition, for those who fancy a break from the wonderful trappings of Portsmouth University and city life, Portsmouth is surrounded by a swathe of idyllic villages and country parks and the Isle of Wight is just across the Solent.

Student Loans

Portsmouth University is allowed to charge new, full-time students up to £3,000 a year for tuition fees from September 2006. Many students will apply for a student loan to cover their tuition fees and day to day living costs. Student loans are the best option for borrowing money for college as interest rates are traditionally low and repayments don't start until graduated students are in work and are earning over £15,000.
